As wild as this is to say, Lambert might've been a more effective interpreter back in the days of the competition and restrictions of American Idol. Somewhere along the way, though, he had a change of heart and threw himself into an ambitious project to cover 11 well-known beloved songs. In Caste, published in 2020, Wilkerson examines the racial hierarchy in America as a caste system, not unlike systems of oppression in India and in Nazi Germany that have enforced dynamics of superiority and inferiority based on characteristics other than race.

On February 27, 2023, Lambert performed " Chandelier" on America's Got Talent: All-Stars finale with the season's winner. The result, High Drama, (★★★★☆) is more than a throwback to his Idol origins — it’s the kind of collection that could only have been put together and delivered by someone confident in his identity as an artist. High Drama’, is a wonderfully diverse collection of covers with a twist, held together by Adam’s once-in-a-generation voice and trademark flair. The idea of a former American Idol contestant releasing a covers album is so on-the-nose that it’s not hard to see why Adam Lambert once openly laughed off the idea. And I thought, "Okay obviously there's no arguing with how brilliant the original is but I can't just copy it. And I think I'm in a place right now that's interesting 'cause I just feel like I have a really strong idea of what I want to make. Grammy-nominated pop icon, LGBTQ trailblazer, and Queen front man Adam Lambert brings you High Drama, a wonderfully diverse collection of covers with a twist, held together by Adam’s once-in-a-generation voice and trademark flair. Adam Lambert: Absolutely, at the BMG party, I got to see some of the other acts that are signed to the label, which was exciting.

I think it is becoming more and more common knowledge that the LGBTQ community really pioneered house music. Signature tracks from the original artists like Chandelier, West Coast and Sex On Fire come to life this time in a very singular aesthetic, and it screams Adam's song and not cover.

He channels his inner Prince for his take on ‘Sex On Fire’ which is transformed from a raucous rock track to a dance-fuelled floor filler that is multi-textured and effervescent. Arguably his boldest choice on the album is his reimagining of “Sex on Fire” as a sweaty, gratuitous dancefloor anthem. The diverse collection of songs span from classics like Ann Peebles’ “I Can’t Stand The Rain” and Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out For A Hero,” to modern hits such as Billie Eilish’s “Getting Older” which gets a glam-inspired transformation, and a rock-leaning rendition of Lana Del Rey’s “West Coast,” with each song showcasing Lambert’s unmatched vocal talent. This genre-spanning collection of reimagined covers takes some of Adam’s favourite songs by artists like Billie Eilish, Lana Del Rey, Bonnie Tyler, Sia, Duran Duran and Kings Of Leon to a different dimension thanks to the classic ‘Adam Lambert’ treatment. His self-styled “glam-rock makeover” of the Bonnie Tyler hit has him belting her lines over thudding bass, injecting the classic earworm with a heavy dose of Lambert. Two more standout tracks are the atmospheric take on Duran Duran's 'Ordinary World', and a gloriously camp, glam rock version of Bonnie Tyler's 'Holding Out for a Hero'. Metro Weekly 's Sean Maunier wrote, "With a mix of songs that allow him to show off a range and versatility, High Drama highlights Lambert's skill as a curator, a side of himself that he has not really shown off much up until this point. Songs range from the more recent, Pink's My Attic, Billie Eilish's Getting Older, an epic rock re-imagining of Lana Del Rey's West Coast, to the beautiful interpretation of Noel Coward’s classic Mad About The Boy.
