These weren't the only things that made it difficult for me to enjoy this book, but they sure didn't help. Daniel the eldest son is striving to become the man his father expects him to be, Evie is friendless and dressing in her dead aunt's clothes, Ruth finds out she is pregnant and Elaine the oldest daughter plans to marry. The pace is slow, due to the author's penchant for describing significant events from the viewpoint of multiple characters.
