That gag reflex was even stronger in the 1980s, when the spandex was tighter, the upside down crosses more pendulous and the nail enlivened armbands more of a pressing health and safety issue. The vocals are more prominent on ‘The Usurper’ and Mokri consequently feels less like an afterthought, and ‘Jewel Throne’ is undeniably punchier, but, before you start conducting your own blindfold test, let me save you some time: these re-recorded tracks are now the ones you hear on both EP and LP. Celtic Frost, together with Venom and Bathory, are considered pioneers of extreme metal (especially black metal). Recorded in Hanover at the start of 1987, “Into The Pandemonium” was not an easy album to make, the band’s experimental ambitions often at odds with their label’s concerns.

x 12”, 40 page book of photography, and brand new interviews with founding member Tom Gabriel Warrior and a rare interview with drummer Reed St. Third disc is the debut full album proper, To Mega Therion, and both at the time and retrospectively, considered a black metal landmark. Extreme metal band Celtic Frost, lead by guitarist Thomas Gabriel Fisher (aka Thomas G Warrior), were formed in the early 80s from the ashes of Hellhammer. The Tragic Serenades EP was both a chance to bring Martin Ain back into the fold and to improve on what they felt was a lacklustre production job by re-recording three To Mega Therion tracks.

It take in the band’s first two albums, 2 EPs, plenty of bonus tracks and a 5th disc of demos, well annotated. Visions Of Mortality features a pace change or two in the song, Dethroned Emperor features touches of Sabbath-esque doom and chunky thrash, a very enjoyable song. Originally a mix of thrash and black metal, later material would mix other more experimental threads (gothic, for example). It, and CELTIC FROST‘s previous releases, increasingly received critical acclaim, which emboldened the band to take more risks, to push the boundaries of heavy music even further with their next album. I like the fact that the rehearsals are included, which allows fans to compare and contrast between the actual tracks and go back and forth and listen.

They have all the rights, but as usual with BMG they contacted me and they said do you want to be involved, we would love to have you on board. It is intense, blistering, but as you’d expect from such a debut it’s still a little rough’n’ready in places. From the furious opening riff of "Into The Crypts Of Rays" through to the avant-garde experimentation of "Danse Macabre", "Morbid Tales" heralded the arrival of CELTIC FROST as a profoundly unique and uncompromising band. Ain was soon brought back into the fold and a few songs from "To Mega Therion" were re-recorded and remixed with Harris Johns, emerging as the excellent sounding "Tragic Serenades" EP.

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. February 1984, Hellhammer recorded Apocalyptic Raids to be released in March, only to realise the game was up in May, they had an entire new band and gameplan by Summer, and were back in Caet Studios in Berlin by October and the result, Morbid Tales was released in November of that year. Convinced, Noise asked CELTIC FROST to record a mini-LP, even though that hadn't formed part of Warrior and Ain's concept document.
