Norwich is an island and Ely Cathedral, which was originally built on a hill 68 feet above flat fenland, rises now on a tiny island about one mile wide. Alone and desperate among marauding gangs, she manages to dig a derelict boat out of the mud and gets away to Eels Island. The belief that she will one day find her parents spurs Zoe on to a dramatic escape in a story of courage and determination that leads to an unexpected and touching conclusion. It is an interesting premise and provides a glimpse of how rising waters could change life as we know it from a 10 year old girl's perspective.The most recent of these nominations rekindled a fascination with Poe that has borne fruit here in (in The Restless Dead, 2007) the form of "The Heart of Another" - inspired by Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart. She lands on tiny Eels Island, where she must survive in a nightmarish world run by wild children and their boy-leader, Dooby. The polar ice caps have melted and the sea level has risen, slowly but inexorably, until most of low-lying eastern England is under water. As it gets warmer, glaciers in the North and South Pole are melting, and it becomes water which makes the ocean bigger.
