The goal, I assume, is to produce the spice melange under the direct control of the sisterhood, as well as to dilute “the collective consciousness of the God Emperor … into just one sandworm, freeing humanity from the shadow of his prescience forever”, as Wikipedia puts it. It’s similar to the plot of the original novel in which Paul Atreides is the first male to possess abilities of the Bene Gesserit, except in this case more horny. Emphasis and importance are prescribed to certain people or places for no apparent reason because the author never saw the need to explain his own story to us or elaborate on all of the vagueness.

I mean, I learned about much of the Dune universe that was never mentioned in the first four books (sex, Ix, the Tleilaxu, the Bene Geserit proscription of love.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. When characters do nothing but plot, and plot, and plot, and NEVER DO ANYTHING ELSE, it gets boring. The wise women of Herbert’s future have been manipulating events behind the scenes for thousands of years.

I enjoyed the first four Dune books so much, I had to move ahead with Option 4: I Love Frank Herbert. Read the series which inspired the 2021 Denis Villeneuve epic film adaptation, Dune, starring Oscar Isaac, Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya and Josh Brolin. Even though he’s been killed off multiple times, and the current version is a copy of a copy, he is still the one constant thread running through the Frank Herbert’s books.Part of the interest for me in the later volumes is seeing how the prescience of Muad’Dib (and even more so of his son the god-emperor Leto II) affected the human race and noting how humanity responded in an attempt to free themselves from the ‘Golden Path’ that it brought about.

The leather of Bene Gesserit in this novel is Taraza, a strong Mother Superior who seems to always be one step ahead of others.Still, there is much separating even this book from the three brilliant masterpieces of the Great Dune Trilogy.
