Description

Larry LaSalle is charismatic and popular, known for encouraging fellow townspeople to dance, play sports, and join other group activities to bring the community together. Nicole Renard the one who francis falls in love with she comes from Albany , New York and Francis tell her that she's the most pretty girl from the whole world. The book is so clear and crisp in it's character's objective it then takes tyou off to explore how evil the antagonist really is. As Francis leaves, he hears the sound of gunshots coming from Larry’s building, indicating that Larry has committed suicide. He narrates the story in a series of flashbacks, after throwing himself on a grenade to supposedly save his fellow soldiers in the war.

I’ve had many ‘heroes’ in my life- most of them my friends, many inspired me to be a better me, a better Brice. The story captures you from the start and we are left second guessing what is going to happen all the way through. I almost felt like an intruder, as I followed all of Francis' separate journeys through different stages in his life, eavesdropping on his private thoughts and feelings, experiencing his self-doubt and rejection. He looks up Lassall to kill him but instead Lassal offers to kill himself, but not before asking if his bad deeds wipes out his good ones.

Over the course of the book we find out why Francis has it out for this man and get a glimpse into his life before the war, and his short-lived relationship with a girl from his hometown who he was and continues to be in love with, Nicole Renard. At parts I really wanted to shut the book because it was painful to think about how it would be to be without a nose, raw cheeks and flaps for ears. The highly original plot and setting will make the reader’s eyes gleam with respect for Robert Cormier’s writing style.

Francis's nostrils are often spoken of as the physical disfigurement which plagues him the most, as they often run and have caused him to wear a bandage over them, secured with a pin at the back of his head which makes it difficult for him to clean. Larry was intriguing, I would have liked to know more about him as I feel that he was putting on a show for Francis, whether that be by being overly dramatic or frightening. On 7 December 1941, the Japanese Empire carried out through the attack on Pearl Harbor, a Hawaiian island. When he fell onto a live grenade, he was willing to sacrifice his life to save his platoon, which disfigured his face. He decided against jumping off the chapel top, and instead lied into the army and some time in the war threw himself on top of a grenade.
