I found myself reading this lengthy novel compulsively, wanting to know (yet knowing) what would happen next. Upon his arrival he sat down to make a note of everything he had seen on the journey, because then he would have done his duty to it, and need not carry it around in his head. He feared, in his secret heart, that one day in company the baby would sit up and speak; that it would engage his eyes, appraise him and say, "You prick. You feel, by the end, that you have not so much been reading a book about the French Revolution as having actually been part of the experience. He understood very well that it was his mother, the hatchet-nosed corpse with its terrifying paper hands.

As Hilary Mantel states in the author’s note, "[t]his is a novel about the French Revolution and almost all of the characters in it are real people". He understood what her mouth had said to him: soon I shall be in my coffin and soon I shall be buried. In 1767--when Armand was able to walk, and Anne-Clothilde was the baby of the household--Jean-Nicolas said to his wife:"Camille ought to go away to school, you know.En wij op onze beurt bestrijden de gevestigde orde alleen maar omdat we er niet in slagen zijn smerige ladder op te klimmen.

He was Jean Recordain, a merchant from the town; he was a widower, with one (quiet) boy to bring up. There is sexual freedom/decadence, like being best friends with your wife’s lover, which brings enormous subplots and intrigue with it. We have cowering, plotting nobility and priests being cajoled in to following the wishes of the new regime. Mantel’s novel is about three leading figures of the French Revolution: Camille Desmoulins, Georges-Jacques Danton, and Maximilien Robespierre. In Mantel’s version of events, he is bisexual, but I do not know whether this is true of the real Desmoulins or not.Well, thanks to the ministrations of Hilary Mantel, I now feel that I have the start of an understanding of the French Revolution and some of its key players. The line of damage ran down the side of his cheek, and intruded a purple-brown spur into his upper lip. Mantel explains that, where possible, she used the historical figures' own words, from their speeches or writings. Camille as an interlocutor between the two more and more struggles with being lesser than these giants of the revolution. Later, after Louis XVI attempts to flee the country, they all support the republic, but Danton keeps a finger in every pie.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. She is the author of fifteen books, including A Place of Greater Safety, Beyond Black, and the memoir Giving Up the Ghost. I had my first book published while I was still at school and have been at it ever since, writing mainly for children and young adults.

At first Danton, who is a powerful speaker, is one of the leaders of the Convention, and extremely popular with the common people of Paris. He was taken up by Stanislas Fréron, who was five years older, who was named after his godfather, the King of Poland. STRUCTURE: Mantel separates A Place of Greater Safety into fairly long chapters (from 30-odd to sixty-odd pages) and each chapter is divided into smaller little scenes or sections that delve into the comings and goings of her numerous characters. In a year of scarcity (they were not uncommon then) he was hunting as usual in the Forest of Sénart. An extraordinary and overwhelming novel…immensely detailed and yet fast-moving…she has set herself to capture the excitement and intellectual fervour of the period. Her other novels include: Fludd, A Place of Greater Safety, A Change of Climate, Beyond Blackand The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher as well as the autobiography Giving up the Ghost.
