About the time I got diagnosed with ADHD, Thom Hartmann produced the first edition of ADHD: Hunters in a Farmer’s World. With such a wide distribution among our population, is it reasonable to assume that ADHD is simply a quirk? As someone with severe ADHD that went undiagnosed until mid 20s, this is extremely validating, albeit telling me what I already knew on some level. If you compare the list of classic ADHD symptoms, and the list of the characteristics of a good hunter, you’ll see that they match almost perfectly.

When humanity experienced the agricultural revolution 10,000 years ago, a vastly different type of personality-the methodical "Farmer"-became dominant. Whereas, non-ADHD children are the "farmers" who are patient, methodical, and focused over long periods of time. The dietary-cause advocates contended that children pattern their parent’s eating habits, and this accounts for the generational patterns of ADHD.But for Hunters to read or study on their own such feedback has not been available until the development of biofeedback that measures alpha wave EEG. A number of medicinal herbs that may also alleviate ADHD including skullcap, valerian, hops, blue and black cohosh, chamomile and lady’s slipper. The term itself, “Attention Deficit” doesn’t even work because it’s not so much a lack of attention as a different way of allocating attention.

I believe I've read the first edition of this book, I was glad to see an updated version being published. With our different brain wiring, not appropriate for a settled life, we are a mismatch for the modern world, but if we learn some new behaviors and strategies, we manage to do quite well. New biofeedback technology has become available that is affordable and can be effective in the process of learning to concentrate. Across the chapters, Hartmann backs his assertions up with evidence, offers non-drug methods and practices to help hunters (as well as those who live alongside them) to welcome their differences, hone their skills, cultivate their creativity, and find success in their lives. When humanity experienced the agricultural revolution 10,000 years ago, a vastly different type of personality–the methodical “Farmer”–became dominant.Evaluating success in meeting the goals needs to happen daily along with a reward for meeting the goals. However, the Hunter skill set offers many opportunities for success in today's Farmer society-if you learn how to embrace your ADHD traits instead of fighting against them. Also, hominins have been hunter-gatherers throughout 90% of human history from the beginning, before evolutionary changes, fire-making, and countless breakthroughs in stone-age societies.

After feeling pretty torn up and unworthy and downright confused about my place in the world, this book helped me reframe my diagnosis in a way that made me love the way my mind works while simultaneously understanding that my type of mind isn’t in fact a burden, but indeed integral to society. He does spend time talking about the high incidence of ADHD in prisons, outside of a very brief paragraph he avoids discussing the systemic reasons that people of color, and people in poverty are less likely to get treatment for ADHD, and more likely to have harsh sentences for crime. This opposite has been considered normal in our culture, but there is a disadvantage to this ability, i. When your life depends on split-second decisions, your frustration and impatience threshold necessarily tend to be low.

Your confidence will be diminished when you are repeatedly told that you are bad, and your performance will likely fail. Learning to concentrate can be very difficult for the Hunter without consistent feedback, feedback that can be available in the classroom from the teacher. He analyzes maladaptive behaviors in humans today and speculates that these behaviors weren’t maladaptive for most of our history when we lived in small tribal groups. Looking back on my life, it is painfully obvious that I have been dealing with this since childhood.
