Conveniently, a set of buttons beside the Joué image allow generated control messages to be filtered by X, Y and Z dimensions individually, making it much easier to use 'MIDI learn' to bind controllers to parameters in instruments and DAWs. There's an additional 'vibrato' parameter which translates left-right (X) movement into pitch bend, where the overall range can be set in the editor. I think I might make a separate thread for ongoing discussion of development, if nothing else to keep me sane while I grok a new skillset. I found the fretboard a little frustrating, but some time spent fine-tuning parameters in the editor, and actually practicing, would probably help. I don’t know if I’ll ever have the time, energy, or money to innovate, but I would love to see a product using the same idea behind the Joué, but usable in standalone.

Joué Play sends MIDI over USB, but the Pro firmware upgrade (€50) unlocks full MIDI and MPE mapping. The silicone modules afford some 'give' when pressed, making the surface a bit more haptic than the Sensel Morph, but with a lot less movement than a ROLI Seaboard. Joué Music Instruments is a company dedicated to creating intuitive and sustainable midi controllers, serving your creativity.I hoped it was just a firmware issue but when I asked on the official forum that they used to run years ago, they said it was a sensor limitation. Joué’s new Play controller, several years in development, falls into the latter camp and is unique in how it combines physical and virtual components. I was strangely able to fiddle with the exact placement of my fingers to get the full aftertouch values while in the same “general” horizontal plane so I think there are 8 horizontal strips, with even and odd strips being shared for the 4 horizontal “areas.

This might be interesting, especially coupled with a weight factor and inertia, to add a lot of dynamics to all the notes. It also happens with the xilophone, when i keep a note pressed, It makes contact several times in a second. The device is versatile, allowing numerous configurations combining keyboard and MIDI controllers, and it is eminently playable as well, although the vibrato response can be a little difficult to master. Plug the re-Connect MIDI cable into your Joué Play and it will send native MIDI messages without any latency.

I chose python because I can use it natively in FL Studio as an instrument handler, making development a bit easier, otherwise I would love to do it in js.

Add a second finger from your other hand, and gradually increase the pressure applied to that finger, while keeping full pressure on the original finger too. Play does function as a general MIDI controller so you can hook it up to anything – its use of USB rather than routing via a MIDI interface is a bonus, as is its ultra-portability. I’ve been working on the processing side of things, but it’s possible to cut out a usable projection surface, stick a NTAG213 RFID chip on the back, and copy the map data of one of the pads into it for an easy cludge. Use the Joue Play with its dedicated app or compose with hundreds of sound banks via Garageband, learn to play in a fun and playful way with Melodics or remix the creations of millions of users from BandLabsocial platform.
