Description

Allow for Serendipity: Move outside your normal realm of comfort and interest, explore far and wide, while stayng open and avoiding jumping to conclusions. In the end, your goal is to identify and pierce through to what makes people unique, to understand the character and values that lie at their cores. Yet even our failures to choose consciously operate as choices, adding to or subtracting from the amount of our potential that we will eventually realize. Mastering a skill is frighteningly difficult task, but you could attain by learning from the masters who have patiently yet fiercely spent decades of time for their discoveries and inventions. In this new age, those who follow a rigid, singular path in their youth often find themselves in a career dead end in their forties, or overwhelmed with boredom.

Since I read this more for knowledge than for practice, I hope to reread this soon with application in mind and will review my ratings then. To put it simply, you practice diligently, but you practice primarily for the sake of the practice itself. If we experience this time as something to get through on the way to real pleasure, then our hours at work represent a tragic waste of the short time we have to live. You are allowing them to project their fantasies onto you, or directing their attention to other theatrical qualities. On your own, however, you must work to maintain your open spirit, letting go of bad habits and deliberately cultivating new ideas. In a common theme that emerges over and over again in the books on mindset and mastery that I've read, Leonard mentions that the performer's mental game and visualization are of paramount importance. Drawing lessons from the lives of accomplished people, this book offers practical, organized advice for how to realize your own Life's Task. One time, as part of his studio work, he was asked to paint an angel in a larger biblical scene designed by Verrocchio.

Arnold Schwarzenneger argued that pumping a weight one time with full consciousness was worth ten without mental awareness. We develop an intuitive sense of the skill and have mastered it to the point of being able to innovate and break the rules. We all have our own mastery endeavors in our lives and I look forward to you using these tools to find and build yours and inspire others to find theirs. He has an elegant writing style, like that of one accustomed to long periods of silence and thinking. We find the excuse of “not having time” or fall into the trap of just wanting the acknowledgement of doing something new rather than really DOING IT!

If there is any sure route to success and fulfillment in life, it is to be found in the longterm, essentially goalless process of mastery. There is still one section of the book devoted to the politics of "mastery"--how to deal with the envious, the lazy, and the clueless--but most of the advice concerns how to apply one's own effort. Once on this path you discover certain side routes that attract you, while other aspects of this field leave you cold. Similarly, if your circumstances limit your contacts, books can serve as temporary mentors, as The Improvement of the Mind did for Faraday.
