About this deal

When she receives cryptic messages from someone in her past, the truth about her identity will be revealed to the world, forcing new questions to surface that threaten her safety, mental health, and anonymity. It was heartwarming to see her come into her own but also frightening as there are forces within and surrounding her that I worried she was ill equipped to handle. Now she’s the center of attention, not only from hungry reporters and police detectives, but also a sinister voice from a past she does not remember. As she begins to discover the horrors of her childhood, recluse Sally steps into the world for the first time, making new friends, finding independence, and learning that people don't always mean what they say. Nugent really showed her magic in his chapters as he was unlike anyone I’ve ever read before in thrillers or crime fiction and his chapters despite being very dark was completely unputdownable.

This story starts off with Sally being brought into the public eye for taking her father out to the trash when he died. I loved Sally Diamond, one of the most interesting characters I have read in a long time and I loved how her character was developed as the story unfolded. I want to thank Netgalley, Gallery/Scout Press for the copy of this book in exchange for a honest review. And Sally is such a memorable lead character and the other characters so dark in comparison to her innocence. Sally has lived an extremely isolated and protected life, but after the death of her father, she's forced to navigate the scary world on her own and confront her sordid past. The blurb doesn't tell you much more, so I won't spoil the plot, but Sally is pulled into a deep and dark journey of discovery into her past and the family secrets that have been kept hidden. I enjoyed the book of hers that I read previously, and particularly that she spent time on characterisation, which it sounds like is true of this one too.

I wanted to ask her how often they had sex, if she enjoyed it, if she was going to have him cremated, if I was expected to go to the funeral, but I didn’t. Like her first book, this latest is an expert depiction of how a twisted mind can influence those around them, the excuses we make for odd behaviour, and how odd, is too odd?As she begins to discover the horrors of her early childhood, Sally steps into the world for the first time - making new friends and big decisions, and learning that people don’t always mean what they say. Liz Nugent does a great job of exploring some dark themes, and it would make for a cracking book club discussion. Her adopted father sheltered her as much as possible, so she’s never had a job, a romantic relationship, or even a friend.

Strange Sally Diamond by Liz Nugent: Echoes of Donoghue’s Strange Sally Diamond by Liz Nugent: Echoes of Donoghue’s

Reading 'Strange Sally Diamond' has been tumultuous from an emotional perspective and I mean that in a positive manner. Why you ask that would be giving away too much, Sally finds herself in the headlines and it’s not for the first time to say bedlam ensues is an understatement. While I would have liked for a different ending, I realize things don’t always work out like they should either. Well done to Liz Nugent, I think this book cements her position as one of Ireland's current finest authors. Liz Nugent has written a haunting and poignant tale with a full palette of emotions, one that won’t be easy to forget any time soon.He has left letters detailing what he knows of the horrific events that led up to her adoption, but we know, from a second narrator, that the truth is even worse … Nugent’s fifth novel is her best yet: evil perpetuates evil in a heartbreaking but humane tale of people damaged beyond repair. One of the most original, and spine-tingling books I've read in ages, Draws you in to the close, claustrophobic world of rural Ireland and the life of an emotionally withdrawn woman whose dark, hidden past is coming back to haunt her. Because she had survived such a traumatic childhood, many parts of her memory and social development were completely lost, so her inner dialogue is completely unguarded, thinking things that would bring other people shame, but she doesn’t experience that emotion. The sense of dread as we learn more and more about Sally’s childhood means that you can’t stop turning the pages. She placed him in the incinerator, deciding to delay reading the contents of the envelope he’d left addressed to her with better instructions.
