Rereading: The Cazalet Chronicles by Elizabeth Jane Howard
The Anna Karenina principle has so long been taken for a truism one hesitates to disagree, but on reading Elizabeth Jane Howard’s Cazalet Chronicles it occurred to me that there’s no such thing as a happy family – how could there be?And when there is any sex, there's no pleasure for the women - indeed that's the opening paragraph of the whole series. The Light Years and Marking Time were serialised by Cinema Verity for BBC Television as The Cazalets in 2001. While the book may be seen as having too many characters and subplots, if you like multigenerational sagas, this is one book that will leave you with an in-depth knowledge of particular places and times, and a desire to find out what happens to the Cazalets post the novel. Such was the sprawling nature of the narrative – it kept to its 10-year framework, and largely to its London and Sussex settings, but featured an ever-expanding cast – that the proposed trilogy became a quartet, published between 1990 and 1995.

Villy Cazalet – endlessly cuckolded wife of Edward – is an extraordinary example of characterization so detailed and so rich that it is possible to dislike her strongly with the fond dislike one normally feels only for a close friend.She never forgot, in her fiction, what it was like to be a young girl, and she carried an ingénue spirit inside a wise and experienced body. No: if I were to be a character in ink-and-paper let me be written by Elizabeth Jane Howard, with her wisdom and shrewdness and near superhuman power of empathy. Howard tells the narrative of the novel from the perspective of the three older children making the novel brave, funny, and perceptive. When Howard died in 2014, aged 90, the Daily Telegraph’s obituary described her as “well-known for the turbulence of her personal life”. Second-rate young men went abroad, their CVs condensed into the acronym FILTH: Failed in London, Try Hong Kong.

It wouldn’t even be of help if the author used both first and last names as just about everyone is a Cazalet.By the third book, Confusion, tragedy has hit the family hard and the girls are embarking on adult life with various degrees of success and happiness. Fortunately for the reader, the Cazalet clan is too large and too wholly, unrelentingly human to be happy. She seemed self-conscious about the impression she created, and anxious – not to efface it, but to check and modify it, so as to put others at their ease. all typical attitudes of their class and time, but it doesn’t make them very endearing to most modern readers.
